The filmmaker’s first documentary is an ode to the two’s enduring friendship and creative partnership, with its title being a cheeky nod to Marc Jacobs’ famed discontinued line, Marc by Marc Jacobs. While the contents of Sofia Coppola’s latest picture has been kept under wraps (will we see the two sketching out their collaborative bag line for Louis Vuitton? Will Romy Mars make a special guest appearance behind the scenes of her Heaven by Marc Jacobs campaign?), the more-than two-decade long friendship sure has plenty of material to pick from.

It was during the designer’s infamous 1992 Perry Ellis grunge-dubbed show that the pair first entered each other’s worlds (check out Sonic Youth’s “Sugar Kane” video for a kaleidoscope view into the runway event). Coppola and her then-partner Spike Jonze teamed up with Diane von Furstenberg and Kim Gordon’s X-Girl label for a guerilla-style fashion show right outside of Jacobs’. Not long after, Coppola requested to meet Jacobs, surely thanks to their similarly defiant creative practices.

By the late ‘90s, the pair had sealed their bond that would last till this day, but it wasn’t until the early ‘00s that the public would enjoy the fruits of their synergetic, professional labour. In 2002, Coppola was chosen to become the very first face of Jacobs’ fragrance line. The dreamlike imagery was lensed by none other than Juergen Teller, the photographer who would shoot the two time and time over, including for the famous 2004 in-bed image, and, as of the time of writing this, their latest portrait posted on Instagram.

Fast forward to 2014, and Jacobs gave Coppola the reins behind the camera, as the director put her signature dreamy-meets-melancholic spin on the Daisy Trio television ad. But by that time, it had already been over a decade of intertwined support. It’s only natural then that Coppola opted for a Jacobs creation for her more-than-many high-profile appearances, including to the Oscars when she took home the coveted Best Original Screenplay award for Lost In Translation. Coincidentally enough, she was also seen sporting a Jacobs’ designed LV number to the 2010 Venice Film Festival, where she won the Golden Lion for Best Film for Somewhere (which, by the way, had Quentin Tarantino on the judging panel).

Perhaps during Jacobs’ highest stake moment of his career, during his tenure at Louis Vuitton, Coppola was always there somewhere, ready to lend some of her undeniable caché. Having spent a fair share of their time in meeting rooms together, the pair ended up creating a sleek and minimal SC-titled handbag launched in 2009 – it’s a modern Jane Birkin story. There was also the familial portrait featuring father Francis Ford alongside his daughter captured a year earlier by Annie Leibovitz, as well as a final campaign in 2013 as Jacobs waved goodbye to the French Maison with a moody image of the film director.

From front row attendances and red carpet dressing, to familial portraits during the designer’s tenure at the French Maison and now, a dedicated documentary, Sofia Coppola and Marc Jacobs’ friendship was always meant to last.

Keep scrolling for a trip down memory lane, retracing the steps in the pair’s high-profile history.
